Join me as I make a collaborative sketchbook that reflects on my Intro to Art Education's class topic discussions of the week!
About The Sketchbook Project
The sketchbook project was started by my professor, Susan Silva, back when the pandemic forced all classes to be virtual. As a way to create a sense of community in her classroom and make the students connect with each other, she started a classroom sketchbook that would be mailed between everyone. Each student would get the sketchbook for one week and create a spread about what they learned about in class, as well as one page that would be a "lead-in" for the next person. This week it was my turn to receive it, and here I'll share what I made.
Materials
Black canvas paper sheet
Scrapbook paper with any patterns
Holographic paper
Popsicle sticks!
Magazine images or any cutouts
Process
Steps:
First, I started off by gathering images from a travel calendar and magazine that correlated to the big ideas. Then, I chose some mini artwork images that related to our artmaking problems. I had to make some fit those problems, such as censoring one piece for concealment and cutting one up for disruption. Afterwards, I decided to make the artworks look like they were displayed on easels, so I created frames with holographic and patterned paper, then placed the artworks on top of the popsicle sticks. I then put them on top of my collage-ready page that I made using scrapbooking paper. On the left, I glued pieces of cardboard to the back of my images to make them pop out, and then glued those images down. I decorated its frame with pattern paper, then used posca markers to write out the big ideas that would signal to the right to showcase that they're connected to the artmaking problems. Lastly, on the last page I created a "lead-in" spread with colorful text stickers for my next classmate to continue it.
Thoughts on the Collaborative Project
Honestly, this was such a fun experience that made me want to get back into scrapbooking, collaging, and/or visual journaling! Seeing the other spreads was incredible, and everyone had amazing ideas to incorporate into the sketchbook to make it 3D. It was very inspiring and it made me feel connected to the peers not only in my class, but in the previous classes as well since we covered the same topics yet displayed them so differently. Overall, I would love to do it again!
