Unexpected Art: Toilet Paper Roll

Join me as I transform a simple paper roll into something more fun!

MATERIALS

  • Plain toilet paper roll

  • Acrylic paints and colors of your choice (any brand will suffice)

  • Palette knife

  • 2 Brushes

  • Palette paper

  • Ruler

  • Sharpie

  • Scissors

  • Hot glue gun

Steps:

Step 1: Setting up the paint

On your palette paper, place some of your favorite paints and mix the colors together with a palette knife. I'm going for a gradient effect so I used dark pink, yellow, and white to match a sunset color scheme.

Step 2: Painting the roll

Using a big brush, paint the colors onto your roll. Because I wanted a gradient, I used a slightly damp brush to blend the acrylic colors more evenly for a smoother transition. Repeat multiple coats for colors to show better.

Step 3: Measuring and cutting

Once dry, use a ruler and a sharpie to mark as many equal lines across the paper roll. My roll is 14 cm, so I measured and marked 1 cm lengths on top and at the bottom. I then cut with my scissors.

Step 4: Shaping the forms

Grab one of your paper rings, then pinch inwards to form a "cross." Repeat for all rings.

Step 5: Gluing

Heat up the hot glue gun, then carefully place the glue around the edges of each little star. Place the star on top of another one, but rotate it as seen in the pictures to create a cooler effect. Then, continue stacking in whatever order of color you want. I wanted to keep the gradient, so I went from dark pink to yellow. For easier assembly and stability, create three stacks to then connect at the end.

Step 6: Final stacking

Grab your previous stacks and stick them all on top of each other with the hot glue gun. Your little toiler paper roll tower is now done! :)

For Your Inspiration:

Among the creative world of artists, Anastassia Elias makes beautiful tiny cityscapes inside of toilet paper rolls in order to raise sanitation awareness. Billions of people do not have access to private toilets, and her intricate work in this series is a reminder that healthy cities (as depicted here) are thanks to good sanitation, while others do not have the same "luxury."

Junior Fritz Jacquet is a French artist that has created toilet paper roll masks. This long collection of masks depicts an exploration of imaginary characters with different facial expressions. Each fold and model is unique, and to finish them, Jacquet coats them with shellac and various pigments.
