Here, I made a sketchbook spread about my experience with the middle school Art Foundations art class at Sandburg Middle School in Alexandria, VA.

Seventh and eighth graders in Mrs. Ortiz's class had the assignment of creating an animal that solved students' everyday issues, then they had to give it superpowers to fix those issues. I chose to recreate their assignment since it seemed really fun. First, I answered the same questions that Mrs. Ortiz's students were asked when designing the animal. Then, I sketched out its front and back with a pencil. Lastly, I labeled which parts of Timmy the Time Management Cat would be coils, slabs, incisions, colors, etc.
Thoughts on Sandburg M.S.
I surprisingly enjoyed this experience. I didn’t know how to feel about middle schoolers because I thought they’d be moody, but they were actually very quiet and polite (must’ve been a good day). They were also easy to speak to and it was nice engaging in conversation with a sweet girl in Spanish. Her creature idea was a tiger-panda that fought bullies, which was a wonderful superpower. The students in the 3D Art Exploration class were also very funny, with one girl creating a Ryan "Goose"ling. I think this experience changed my perception about middle schoolers because they seem more manageable than I imagined, that is if you keep them engaged and enforce rules!
