"What Do You Make Art About?" Sketchbook Spread

Here, I made a sketchbook spread about one of the main concepts in my artwork.

Materials

  • Yellow construction paper

  • Fabric patterns

  • Posca Markers

  • Black Sharpie

  • White gelly roll pen

Commentary

This semester in my Drawing III class, I decided to create a portfolio based on Peruvian culture and textiles. I incorporated fabric into my drawings of indigenous people figures, as well as cut-out elements that represent Andean patterns to highlight the beauty of the culture. My series started off with the first piece being a self-portrait about not knowing my full self (hence the holes in my body) except my nationality, which then progressed to investigating more about my culture (hence the cockade), to finally focusing on the beauty of my culture and showing appreciation for the indigenous people. In my sketchbook entry, I added fabric and symbolic patterns to depict this artistic theme/concept. Here are the mixed-media drawings I've made thus far:

As a future art educator, I hope to encourage my students to reconnect with their roots and make art about their beautiful cultural backgrounds.
